PRECISTA B-UHR LIMITED EDITION- PRS-42

Shortly after the German Luftwaffe was regrouped in 1935 the Ministry of Aviation (Reichsluftfahrtministerium) or RLM introduced three different kinds of watches to their fighter pilots, bomber crews, and ground personnel The first one was a single/double pusher type chronograph manufactured by Hanhart and Tutima, Glashütte. The ground crew was equipped with a fairly inexpensive type of field watch. And finally there was the probably most famous type of watch: the Luftwaffe observer’s watch or Beobachtungsuhr (“B-Uhr”).

Here is the 1942 original spec sheet for a “Type B dial” B-Uhr manufactured by Wempe Chronometerwerke, Hamburg. Note the inner 12 hour chapter ring on the dial, the large crown and thick crown tube:

Wempe

The B-Uhr was issued to all bomber crews and was mainly carried by the navigator who used it for all sorts of navigational purposes. The watch was not part of the personal equipment but was handed out before a mission and had to be returned after. The original spec sheet demanded the B-Uhr to be fitted with a very accurate centre seconds pocket watch movement with hacking second which was tested and regulated to the highest standards by the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg. Since those precision movements were originally designed for pocket chronometers the watches were very large even by today’s standards.
The cabins of German bombers were in most cases unpressurized and unheated. That is why most B- Uhren were fitted with a very long and safety-riveted leather strap with roller buckle so that it could be worn over the sleeve of the thick shearling flight jacket. Some of later versions were delivered on a shorter strap (“Kurzband”) so that they could be worn as a normal watch during missions.

A German airman checks the mission protocol before sortie. His type “B” B-Uhr is worn outside his heavy sheepskin flight jacket. Look at the inner chapter ring on the dial and the short hour hand. Only type “B” versions had this specific detail.

Navigator

The B-Uhr was manufactured by 5 different companies in two dial configurations. Design and assemblage were carried out according to a strict and precise RLM spec sheet. Nevertheless there are some notable differences between the different contracts which make original B-Uhren in good condition even more desirable for any serious watch collector.
Common features for all of them were the high quality chronometer grade movements with Breguet balance springs, indirect centre seconds with hacking feature, oversized cases and crowns for superb legibility and easy winding and setting.

Here is a group shot which shows both dial versions and also illustrates the subtle differences between each manufacturer’s cases. Note the different crown and lug shapes and differences in lug spacing:

Group

A beautifully aged Laco type “B”. The luminous material on the dial has faded to a nice cream color. Please note the three-piece case construction and that only the even numbers on the outer chapter ring are lumed. This is a detail that is not captured in most of the modern reproductions.

Laco

Key features of the original contracts:

A.Lange & Söhne, Glashütte: The Lange features a field grey coated zinc or nickel alloy case with 55mm diameter, onion style crown with thick crown tube, “A” and “B” type dials, cal. 45 and 48/1 in-house movements with three-quarter plate, swan-neck regulator and 16 jewels, gilded finish. Not all of them were assembled in Glashütte but assemblage and regulation was sometimes done by subcontractors, Wempe, Hamburg and Huber, Munich being among them.

Erich Lacher & Co (Laco), Pforzheim: The Laco features a field grey coated zinc diecast case with soldered brass lugs with 55mm diameter, onion style crown with long and sturdy crown tube, type “A” and “B” dial, very large in-house caliber Durowe 5 with22 jewels and gilded finish.

International Watch Company (IWC), Schaffhausen: The IWC features a bead blasted full stainless steel case with 55mm diameter, crowns are either cylindrical or diamond shaped for later versions, the lug spacing was also widened by 2mm for later versions to accept a sturdier strap, type “A” is the only dial option, cal. 52 SC (seconde central) in-house movement with three-quarter plate, 16 jewels and swan-neck regulator, gilded finish.

Walter Storz (Stowa), Pforzheim: The Stowa features a field grey coated zinc diecast case with 55mm diameter, oblong onion style crown, type “A” and “B” dial versions, Unitas cal. 2812 with 20 jewels, swan-neck regulator, nickel plated finish with Geneva stripes.

Wempe Chronometerwerke, Hamburg: The Wempe features a field grey coated 55mm zinc alloy diecast case, although some claim that at least a couple of them were assembled with 800-alloy silver cases, onion style crown, type “A” and “B” dial versions, Thommen cal. 31 with 15 jewels and cam regulator, gilded finish.

The PRS-42 –our take on the B-Uhr

PRS-42

Drawing

When we decided to make a B-Uhr our first thought was “But we have to do it properly!”. In this case “proper” starts with the correct movement and case. Putting a modern automatic movement into some vintage inspired watch just seemed not good enough.

The Movement

Luckily we were able to source a small number of very rare Unitas pocket watch movements that have been adapted to indirect centre seconds modification by an expert Swiss company. This is a very expensive and even rarer movement that is exactly in keeping with the original 1942 specification for the Wehrmacht B-Uhr: It is a large and beautifully finished pocket watch movement with blued screws and Geneva stripes that completely fills the case. It also features a classic swan neck regulator and screwed balance for superb accuracy. What truly sets it apart from any competitor is its unique and improved hacking device. When you pull the crown the watch does not simply stop: the seconds hand will continue to run until it stops on the 12 hour indicator. This truly is an ingenious feature that is available on this specific movement only.

Movement

The Case

The watch case design is not taken from any specific manufacturer but is instead an amalgamation of the best design features compressed into a smaller and much more wearable watch. The case features the straight and square lugs of the Laco but they have been beefed up and slightly lengthened for good comfort.
The crown is a very large onion style crown with a thick and strong crown tube that makes winding and setting really smooth and easy. The crystal is of course a modern sapphire crystal with internal A/R coating but we managed to replicate the complex, yet beautiful domed shape of the original acrylic “Plexiglas” crystal with its several internal and external radiuses.
Like the original B-Uhr this is a three-piece case design but it’s not a snap-on bezel and caseback: the bezel and back are screwed down. It is a full CNC construction made from 316L stainless steel with a period correct dark grey bead blasted finish. The top loader design eliminates the use of a movement retaining ring. This is a high quality solution and just the way the old B-Uhren were made.

Dial, Hands and Strap

When we decided to make a type “B” B-Uhr we knew from the start that the dial was a critical part. Too many watches on the market have wrong dial layouts and what is even more important: the Superluminova is not correctly applied. Vintage type “B” dials only have the even numbers on the outer chapter ring lumed. We have done it correctly.
Also the blued hands are just as they should be. They have the correct length and width, are properly pointed, and are evenly filled with strong glowing Superluminova C3 (cream-light green) to match the lume on the dial.
The leather strap is made from camel coloured Pittards’ nubuck leather which is thick but supple and will develop a beautiful patina with wear. The strap takes most design features from the original “Kurzband” short-style strap which was introduced with later versions of the B-Uhr. It features the correct hardware and roller buckle which are now made from much more durable stainless steel with a matching bead blasted finish.

ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY LIMITED EDITION OF 100 PIECES - PRS-41

If you grew up in the UK during the 1950s and 60s, you would no doubt have seen luxury motor cars with a sphinx mascot on the bonnet. These cars were manufactured by Armstrong Siddeley, a motor manufacturer founded just after the First World War in 1919. When I was a (very) young soldier stationed on Salisbury Plain, the owner of the newsagent shop on The Packway at Larkhill own both Armstrong Siddeley Star and Sapphire cars, business must have been good!

The company was created following the purchase by Armstrong Whitworth of Siddeley-Deasy, a manufacturer of fine motor cars, that were marketed to the top echelon of society. After the merge of companies this focus on quality continued throughout in the production of cars, aircraft engines, gearboxes for tanks and buses, rocket and torpedo motors, and the development of railcars. Company mergers and takeovers with Hawker Aviation and Bristol Aero Engines saw the continuation of the car production but the production of cars ceased in August 1960.

The company was absorbed into the Rolls-Royce conglomerate who were interested in the aircraft and aircraft engine business. Eventually the remaining spares and all motor car interests were sold to the Armstrong Siddeley Owners Club Ltd, who now own the patents, designs, copyrights and trademarks, including the name Armstrong Siddeley. These rights do not include the trade mark for watches in Class 14, which is registered to Time Factors.

The cars were mainly luxury saloons and advertising was aimed very strongly at the upper classes and depicted a luxury lifestyle. These cars were affordable only by the privileged and were a symbol of success. The Armstrong Siddeley wristwatch is a fitting tribute to these cars with its timeless classic styllng and, like the cars, will only be enjoyed by a limited number of owners.

SMITHS "BLACK SHADOW" - PRS-38

Inspired by the design of vintage motor cycle instruments with black body and chromed bezel (the watch has a polished stainless steel bezel), this watch captures the look of a speedometer whilst still retaining clear functionality as a watch. Several designs were produced before deciding to go with this one and the full design discussion can be seen here

SEWILLS "FERREIRA" PRS-39

Time Factors is proud to announce the launch of the first new watch to bear the Sewills name in 15 years. The Sewills "Ferreira" has been more than two years in the design, manufacture and movement modification to produce a watch of the highest quality.

The Portuguese shipping company Joaquim Antunes Ferreira purchased the clipper from Jock Willis in 1895 for £1250 and renamed it “Ferreira” after the name of the company.   The ship was known by the crew as “Pequena camisola”, meaning “little shirt” which was a straight translation from the Scottish “Cutty Sark”.

The “Cutty Sark” was commissioned by shipping magnate John “Jock” Willis and the contract for construction was signed on 1 February 1869 with shipbuilding company Scott and Linton from Dumbarton.   The price was £17 per ton up to a maximum weight of 950 tons.   The ship was designed by Hercules Linton, who was only 32 years old when he designed the clipper.

Hercules Linton

Despite running out of money during the construction, additional funds were raised and the “Cutty Sark” was launched on 22nd November 1869.

The ship was named after Cutty-sark, the nickname of the witch Nannie Dee in Robert Burns' 1791 poem Tam o' Shanter. The ship's figurehead, the original carved by Robert Hellyer of Blackwall, is a stark white carving of a bare-breasted Nannie Dee with long black hair holding a grey horse's tail in her hand. In the poem she wore a linen sark (Scots: a short chemise or undergarment), that she had been given as a child, which explains why it was cutty, or in other words far too short. The erotic sight of her dancing in such a short undergarment caused Tam to cry out "Weel done, Cutty-sark", which subsequently became a well known catchphrase. Originally, carvings by Hellyer of the other scantily clad witches followed behind the figurehead along the bow, but these were removed by Willis in deference to 'good taste'.

The ship traded various cargoes between Portugal, Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, Mozambique, Angola, and Britain. In May 1916 she was dismasted off the Cape of Good Hope because of the rolling of the ship in bad weather and had to be towed into Table Bay off Cape Town. Because of World War I, it was impossible to obtain suitable materials to replace the masts so she was re-rigged over 18 months to a barquentine sail arrangement.

Cutty Sark

In 1922 Ferreira was the last clipper operating anywhere in the world. Caught in a storm in the English Channel she put into Falmouth harbour where she was spotted by retired windjammer captain Wilfred Dowman, of Trevissome House, Flushing, Cornwall, who was then operating the training ship Lady of Avenel. The ship returned to Lisbon, where she was sold to new owners and renamed Maria do Amparo. However, Dowman persevered in his determination to buy the ship, which he did for £3,750 and she was returned to Falmouth harbour. The rigging was restored to an approximation of the original arrangement and the ship was used as a cadet training ship. As a historic survivor, the ship was opened to the public and visitors would be rowed out to inspect her. Dowman died in 1936 and the ship was sold to the Incorporated Thames Nautical Training College, HMS Worcester at Greenhithe, leaving Falmouth for her last journey under sail in 1938. The ship was crewed by cadets, 15-year-old Robert Wyld steering the ship during the voyage.[26] Ian Bryce, DSC, the last surviving crew member on the historic journey from Falmouth to the Thames died, aged 89, on 11 December 2011.

The Ferreira’s Sewills ship’s chronometer, registered number 4608, is now in The National Maritime Museum.

4608

This is a limited edition of just 100 pieces and because of the time taken to modify the movements, it is unlikely that this watch will ever be available again.

SMITHS "SEAFIRE" - PRS-37

Most people will have heard of the "Spitfire" aircraft from World War 2 but the "Seafire" is rarely mentioned. The Supermarine Seafire was a naval version of the Supermarine Spitfire adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. The name "Seafire" was arrived at by abbreviating the longer name "Sea Spitfire".

Originally, the Seafire was still a fixed wing aircraft like the Spitfire but with the introduction of the Seafire F MkIII, manually folding wings were added to make deployment on aircraft carriers easier.

The PRS-37 has been designed with an extremely legible dial and hands, in the style of aircraft instruments. The case is satin finished black PVD.

The movement used in the PRS-37 is the ISA9500-1010 quartz movement. This movement has the appearance of a mechanical movement inasmuch as the seconds hand "ticks" 4 times a second. Setting the time is not like a conventional quartz movement and this video demonstrates how to set the time.

Like all Time Factors watches all of the components used are manufactured specifically for this watch (except for the movement), stock components are not used.

SMITHS NATO Watch - PRS-40

Earlier this year I was contacted by the Italian designer Giovanni Moro who said he had an idea for a new watch and he sent me some design pictures. I initially thought it was interesting but not for me. Over the next few weeks I kept returning to the pictures and began to like it more and more which led me to discussing the watch with the designer and reaching an agreement whereby I could licence his design and manufacture the watch under my own brand name.

Some changes were made to the original specifications which made it more manufacturing friendly and a new movement was sourced as the original movement was quite small and more suited to a women's watch. This is the original concept:

When the decision was made to proceed with the watch, an application was submitted to the Ministry of Defence for a NATO Stock Number (NSN). The application was successful and it was allocated 6645-99-994-7232.

Like all Time Factors watches all of the components used are manufactured specifically for this watch (except for the movement), stock components are not used.

SMITHS Vintage Cushion Case- PRS-36

I've received many requests for a smaller watch in the vintage style and this style has always been a personal favourite. A clean and simple watch which does nothing more than tell the time and slim enough to slip under any cuff, it can be worn for casual or formal occasions.

Although the case measures only 37mm across, excluding the crown), it wears more like a 40mm watch because of the square shape but is only 10.5mm thick to the top of the bombé sapphire crystal.

Like all Time Factors watches all of the components used are manufactured specifically for this watch (except for the movement), stock components are not used.

PRECISTA ROYAL NAVY DIVER RE-EDITION - PRS-82

The Precista Royal Navy diver is arguably the rarest of all British issued dive watches, being issued in 1981 and 1982 only. The stock number is 0552/923-7697 which curiously, was also the number used on Rolex and CWC issued divers around this time. I have seen only two examples offered for sale in the last 12 months and both commanded a price in excess of £2,000. Hardly Milsub prices but nonetheless, higher than anyone would have thought possible a few years ago.

Apart from the asymmetrical case, the most distinctive feature of this model is the hands; the hands have two familiar names, one of them is "snake head" hands and you'll have to use Google for the other name ;-)

11

This re-edition uses the same ETA movement as the original, the ETA2783 25 jewel automatic. These are new old stock movements which have been cleaned, lubricated and adjusted in August 2013. The luminous is the same "vintage lume" used on the dials of the Precista PRS-20 California dial.

PRECISTA BRONZE WATCH - PRS-30

This watch was conceived during a forum discussion from June 2008. Several designs were put forward before finally deciding on this one and during the discussion it was suggested that this shouldbe a bronze watch. Had it been possible to source the correct grade of bronze at the time, the PRS-30 woujld have been one of the first bronze watches available. In the event, sourcing a (comparatively) small quantity of bronze proved difficult until a supplier who was prepared to supply it in kilos, rather than tonnes, was located in Switzerland.

One of the main appeals of bronze watches is the way in which the case slowly oxidises and changes colour to a rich chocolate brown, in the same way as bronze works of art patinate. Of course the natural bronze colour can be maintained if preferred by gentle polishing or wiping with a mildly acidic liquid (Coca-Cola is recommended by some). Patination will not initially be uniform across the entire case although this can be accelerated by using any of the methods to be found by conducting a "Google" search.

The thumbnails below show some of the design suggestions posted during the discussions. Thanks to Chris Parker for his design shown on the right, the design which went forward for production.

The watch has a 33mm visible dial, which is of two-layer sandwich construction with a dark brown/charcoal dial and SuperLuminova C3 coating on the under-dial showing through the numbers and indices cut-outs. The domed sapphire crystal is 2.2mm thick and has anti-relective coating to the underside. The 12-pointed star crown (unique to this watch) measures 4.5mm high by 7mm across and is signed with the Precista "P" ambigram. The hands are black frame with SuperLuminova C3 filled tips; the end of the seconds hand is also luminous coated.

SMITHS 200 metre Automatic Diver - PRS-68

This watch pays homage to a design which wil be instantly recognised by the majority of watch aficionados world-wide. If you are lucky enough to own an original, chances are you rarely wear it for fear of damaging it even though it's your favourite watch. It's surprising that this design first appeared 45 years ago and whilst it may be considered unusual or even "quirky", it looks just as modern today as it did then.

As with all Time Factors homages, there are a few improvements:

  • Water resistance improved to 200 metres.
  • Screw-down crown replaces bayonet locking crown.
  • Sapphire crystal to replace original mineral crystal.
  • Lug spacing increase to 20mm to enable a greater variety of straps to be fitted.
  • Movement uprated to hi-beat (Miyota 9015).
  • Quality stainless steel bracelet with solid end links.

Like all Time Factors watches all of the components used are manufactured specifically for this watch (except for the movement), stock components are not used.

PRECISTA CZECH AIR FORCE - PRS-9

If you've been following Time Factors watches since the beginning, this one will be familiar to you. It first hit the drawing board in 2003 but techical problems delayed it for so long it was put back on the shelf until 2009, when the design and revised specification were given to another company, who overcame the original difficulties and produced what is a superb watch. At least one manufacturer boasts that it (only) takes a year to make their watches ;-).

It would have been easy enough to make the watch without the rotating bezel with pointer under the crystal but this is such an important part of the watch that I wasn't prepared to omit this important feature. The watches to which the PRS-9 pay homage had little or no water resistance, arguably because if you need water resistance in an aircraft, your watch is the least of your worries. Because the crystal rotates with the bezel, it was difficult to achieve any water resistance at all and the fact that the PRS-9 is water resistant to 30 metres is no small design achievement.

MOVEMENT

The PRS-9 is fitted with a new old stock AS1130 movement, one of the calibres popularly known as a "Wehrmacht" movement. Swiss made with 17 jewels, running at 18,000 BPH and with a power reserve of 41 hours. All movements have been stripped, cleaned, inspected, oiled and regulated in 2012.

STRAP

The strap supplied with the PRS-9 is a custom strap made in a style contemporary with those which would have been fitted in 1938. The original straps would have been cut-edge thick leather but the strap on the PRS-9 has been made from soft glove leather supplied by Pittards tannery in Somerset, England. Pittards was founded in 1826, you can read more of their history here . A roller buckle is fitted, as is a fixed metal keeper plus a floating leather keeper and screwed "rivets". All steel hardware has been bronzed (hardware on the original straps would have been painted).

This watch is made in Germany.

SMITHS EVEREST- PRS-25

Almost everyone is familiar with the name of one of the watches which was worn by Hillary and Tensing when they reached the summit of Everest in 1953 but fewer people realise that the other watch was a Smiths, as shown in the 1953 advert below.

smiths

Of course, the Smiths of 2011 looks nothing like the Smiths of 1953 but it is a reminder that a British watch accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on that historic climb.

The PRS-25 is the first Time Factors watch to use the new Miyota 9015 automatic movement. Miyota is a division of Citizen, the largest manufacturer of movements in the world and the 9015 has been compared most favourably with the ETA2892-2.

Like all Time Factors watches, the case has been designed and manufactured from scratch; stock cases are not used.

The hi-dome acrylic crystal is perfectly shaped and 2.5mm thick; the solid stainless steel bracelet tapers from 22mm to 20mm at the clasp and has half links to ensure adjustment for a perfect fit.
